Human Connection Skills Across Grade Levels

The same six Human Connection Competencies™ organize the framework from PreK through grade 12, but the expectations, prompts, independence and complexity should change as students develop.

PreK–Kindergarten

Keep practice concrete, brief and supported. Students can practice greeting, turn-taking, noticing, simple listening, welcoming and expressing ideas through words, pictures, movement or other communication.

Grades 1–2

Students can begin connecting actions with group life, practice simple follow-up questions, notice similarities and differences, and take small supported responsibilities.

Grades 3–5

Students can listen more deliberately for meaning, ask questions connected to what was said, consider multiple perspectives, contribute to group norms and take increasingly meaningful but age-appropriate leadership roles.

Grades 6–8

Practice can include more complex disagreement, peer dynamics, identity-safe discussion, group norms, perspective-taking and supported facilitation. Students still retain privacy and the right to pass.

Grades 9–12

Students can practice facilitating dialogue, mentoring, collaboration across differences, workplace/community transfer, service-oriented leadership and more complex reflection — without assuming that every student should be publicly expressive or socially dominant.

Development is not a race

Grade bands describe a developmental pathway, not a rigid standard for personality or social performance. Educators should meet students where they are and provide accessible opportunities to practice. Growth should be considered in relation to the skill and context, not comparison with classmates.
