A companion practice for student wellbeing
Universities are stretched thin on the inside of the counseling office and on the outside of student life. Fika Pause is a free, non-clinical daily practice you can recommend across counseling centers, residence life, chaplaincy, international student offices, and faculty wellness — without adding a system to manage.
Why Fika Pause benefits universities
- Addresses the documented loneliness and meaning gaps of college life with small daily prompts
- Complements (does not replace) counseling — gives students a between-session anchor
- Honors international students through a tradition (Swedish fika) rooted in hospitality and belonging
- Costs the institution nothing to recommend; the app is free to begin
How Fika Pause can be used
- Counseling centers: include in after-visit summaries as a supplemental wellbeing practice
- Residence life: introduce during welcome week as a 'small daily ritual' alongside other resources
- Chaplaincy & spiritual life: integrate into reflection groups and quiet hour programming
- Faculty & staff wellness: share as part of an opt-in personal practice menu
Suggested implementation ideas
- QR code in the counseling center waiting room and on the wellbeing landing page
- A 'Fika Friday' tradition in residence halls — fifteen minutes, a drink, a conversation prompt
- Inclusion in the international student welcome packet alongside language and culture resources
- A campus-wide 'pause week' during midterms with conversation cards in libraries and dining halls
