Matthias Mehl and colleagues' work using ambient audio recorders has consistently associated more substantive conversations — and fewer purely transactional ones — with higher wellbeing. The mechanism is debated. The direction is clear: depth matters.

What depth actually means

Not heaviness. Not therapy. Depth in conversation simply means: you talked about something that matters to at least one of you, and you both noticed.

Two skills

  • Better questions. Open, specific, curious. "What's been on your mind this week?" beats "How are you?"
  • Real listening. No phone. Eye contact. A follow-up question before you change the subject.

Try this today

Pick one person you'll see today. Ask them one question you've never asked them before. Listen until they're done.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the other person isn't interested in depth?
Don't force it. Depth is an invitation, not a demand. Notice who meets you there.
Aren't small-talk conversations also valuable?
Yes — they're connective glue. The research isn't 'small talk is bad.' It's 'mostly small talk is correlated with lower wellbeing than a mix.'
